Imagine if you were the last human on Earth. So far into the future, the entire planet is inhabited by strange, alien creatures. The Earth is not even called Earth anymore. Eva Nine is the last human on Earth (now known as Orbona,). Nothing is as it used to be in Toni DiTerlizzi’s book, The Search for WondLa.
Eva Nine is a 12-year-old girl, who has never seen another human in her life. For all 12 years of her life, she has lived in an underground facility, referred to as the Sanctuary. A robot named Muthr (multi-utility task helper robot #6) has raised her all her life. Her only reassurance that she is not completely alone is a small cardboard slab, with a picture of a girl, a robot, and an adult on it. It also has the broken-up word “WondLa” on it. She has been taught about the outside world through holographic lessons, showing her how to survive. The problem is, and no one knows this, is that the world has changed…a lot. All is going well in the Sanctuary, until a huntsman breaks into her home and nearly destroys it. Eva barely escapes alive, but makes it out onto the surface of the planet. Outside, she meets an alien named Rovander Kitt. He helps her to rescue Muthr, and agrees to help her find the origin of the WondLa- thus, “the search for WondLa.”
I highly recommend this book. The alien cityscapes- even the creatures themselves- are described very well, and the world created in the book is amazing. To experience this amazing future Earth, all you have to do is pick up the book.
